چکیده

Paleoclimatic data is increasingly showing that abrupt change is present in wide regions of the globe. Here we present a mechanism for abrupt climate change with global implications. Results from a tropical coupled ocean-atmosphere model show that under certain orbital con gurations of the past, variability associated with El Ni~ no/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) physics can abruptly lock to the seasonal cycle for several centuries producing a mean sea surface temperature (SST) change in the tropical Paci c which resembles a La Ni~ na. We suggest that this change in SST would have a global impact and that abrupt events such as the Younger Dryas may be the outcome of orbitally driven changes in the tropical Paci c.

Abrupt Circulation Responses to Tropical Upper-Tropospheric Warming in a Relatively Simple Stratosphere-Resolving AGCM

The circulation response of the atmosphere to climate change–like thermal forcing is explored with a relatively simple, stratosphere-resolving general circulation model. The model is forced with highly idealized physics, but integrates the primitive equations at resolution comparable to comprehensive climate models. An imposed forcing mimics the warming induced by greenhouse gasses in the low-l...

Abrupt change in tropical African climate linked to the bipolar seesaw over the past 55,000 years

[1] The tropics play a major role in global climate dynamics, and are vulnerable to future climate change. We present a record of East African climate since 55 ka, preserved in Lake Malawi sediments, that indicates rapid shifts between discrete climate modes related to abrupt warming (D-O) events observed in Greenland. Although the timing of the Malawi events cannot be determined exactly, our a...

Synchronous interhemispheric Holocene climate trends in the tropical Andes.

Holocene variations of tropical moisture balance have been ascribed to orbitally forced changes in solar insolation. If this model is correct, millennial-scale climate evolution should be antiphased between the northern and southern hemispheres, producing humid intervals in one hemisphere matched to aridity in the other. Here we show that Holocene climate trends were largely synchronous and in ...

Drivers of ecosystem and climate change in tropical West Africa over the past 540 000 years

A paucity of empirical non-marine data means that uncertainty surrounds the impact of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems in tropical regions beyond the last glacial period. The sedimentary fill of the Bosumtwi impact crater (Ghana) provides the longest continuous Quaternary terrestrial archive of environmental change in West Africa, spanning the last 1.08 million years. Here we explore th...

relatively standard. Thus, when an abrupt change in one grid is detected, it means that the difference between the two states before and after the abrupt change of this moment has the biggest amplitude by comparing with the other moment. Taking fig. A3 for example, we know that both the two series have two abrupt changes in moment t1 and t2 respectively. However, when we detect the abrupt chang...
